The Lightweights

The lightweights are the best drivers in the game. They have the fastest acceleration and the highest top speed. Toad is slightly lighter than Yoshi or Peach, but the difference is so small it's not really noticeable. Many people believe that the heavyweights are the fastest drivers in the game (even Nintendo said they were), but the experts and world record holders at mariokart64.com have proven that the lightweights are the best. The Middleweights

Mario & Luigi, contrary to popular belief, are not any faster than the heavyweights. Their normal acceleration (on the normal roads) and top speed are the same. The only differences between the middleweights and the heavyweights are that Mario & Luigi are lighter and they also have quicker acceleration when going on dirt, mud, etc.

The Heavyweights

Unlike Super Mario Kart, the heavyweights are the slowest racers in the game. They have the slowest acceleration and the slowest high speed. If you use them in Battle Mode, you will be able to make an opponent lose a balloon if you run into them at a high speed.
